Did you know it’s World Heritage Day? This is Tom Smith, our Heritage Planner at City of Newcastle. He says it’s an important day because “it reminds us that we all have heritage, and that this heritage can be fragile and needs to be protected. But also, that it needs to be celebrated.”

For City of Newcastle and the heritage we protect and manage, people often forget that it’s about more than just old buildings. “It’s far broader than just listed buildings,” explains Tom. “It’s a protection of place. A place can also incorporate Aboriginal culture, as well as archaeology and conservation areas. And then, we have heritage collections – the museum, the art gallery, the library and so forth.… More
